Travel Agency
Don’t delay. Go now! The travel industry is as hungry for business as any other, and deals are ripe to be made. Rarely is a price truly fixed. Competition on the internet has greatly increased the opportunity for flexibility.
Should I use a Travel Agent or Book the Trip Myself?
There are benefits to both.
If you choose to book your trip on line, you can virtually eliminate the middleman, offering the potential for savings. Great deals can be made at many online sites. You can check out packages being offered specifically to draw business during slower seasons, and remember to ask what discounts might be available for boomers.
But travel agents do offer both an insider’s knowledge of the industry, at a level measureable to that of only the very experienced traveler. If you encounter problems on your trip, a travel agent can offer assistance even remotely. Certainly complex, expensive trips, trips with small children, or trips out of the country may go more smoothly with the assistance of an agent.

Chillin’ in the Villages. Literally. Chillin’!
It’s cold in central Florida. We rented a house for a month. It’s too cold to swim in the heated pools!
But the crazy golfers are out on the courses regardless. They’re a breed unto themselves.

Cruising sounds wonderful. It’s been so long since I have been on a vacation that I can hardly recall it. I think this is the age where we are supposed to be doing a lot of that. I find, however, that most of my vacations are stay-cations! Chicago is my favorite short trip. If the weather is warm, you can sit out on the lawn in Grant Park and watch the summer symphony…one of my favorite experiences in life. And in the fall, you can go to the Chicago Symphony, perhaps one of the best in the world. And I loved San Francisco. But there is a lot more I’d like to explore. I haven’t seen the Grand Canyon yet, or Yellowstone, or been to a bed and breakfast in Maine. I’ve never been off of this continent, so maybe that will be my next goal.
What has been your favorite vacation?

Cruisin’ is the ultimate travel experience. Unpack and then do nothing but let the staff take care of your every need. Lounge in the deck chairs and watch the ocean go bay. Four course meals in the dining room. Drinks with umbrellas in them. Drinks with rum in them. Relax in the spa. Relax by the pool. Relax in the hot tub. Relax on a Caribbean beach. See a show. See a movie. Perfection.

A great vacation is Charleston, S.C. in the spring or fall, not summer though, too humid. Great food and music, beautiful old houses, easy walking or biking, just a great place. Our son lives there, has a car, but he never uses it. He rides his bicycle everywhere. He loves it.
I’m so looking forward to October when I have my vacations. A week at St. Pete beach, where it’s peaceful and beautiful. Then off on my first cruise the week after. When I told my teacher friends about being off another week after fall break (feeling guilty) they said heck (I teach in a Christian school) go on!! So I’ll be vacationing guilt-free.

It’s off to the Poconos for us. I’ve always heard about the Poconos. Never been there. Anybody out there been there? What can we expect?

Hey FF, when you’re down there, check out the blogs people use and clue us in. I’d be interested to know more about what goes on down there.

The Villages, Florida’s friendliest hometown.
We’ve booked a month for this winter. We will be the dreaded snowbirds people complain about.
We’ll walk around with our pale skin hanging out of our bermuda shorts. Hubby will play golf. I’ll swim in the pool and see what’s going on at the town square. We’ll take in movies. We’ll drive around in our golf carts on those beatifully landscaped grounds. We’ll drive to the grocery, to WalMart, to the liquor store…anywhere we want to go…in our golf cart. (Oh…they call them golf CARS down there.) We’ll eat at the restaurants and browse the stores.
It’s not a bad gig for a retired person.

Who said anything about shorts?

I still like going to places I’ve never been, seeing things I’ve never seen. Forget the beach! Who needs sand in their shorts anyway??

Let’s talk about vacations…what makes a good vacation for you? I like to alternate the “quiet, sleep-late on fluffy, white sheets and then walk on the beach” vacations with the “see something cool, something historical, something you’ve never seen before” vacations. I enjoy sampling local cuisine, checking out the local haunts, talking with the folks who live there…getting the real flavor of the place. Never been on a cruise, and haven’t been out of the country much.

I’ve been on six cruises and my seventh is planned for this coming October.
I think a cruise is a great boomer vacation. You unpack once, the service is fabulous, the food is great and you can be as busy or active as you like.
Favorite cruise by far…Alaska.
Second choice…Panama Canal.
But, I’m looking forward to visiting Holland America’s private island, Half Moon Cay, for the third time this fall. Beautiful blue water, white soft beaches and the beautiful ship in the background. Paradise found.

There are some “hot” travel deals, if you can just go on the spur of the moment…
A great “Boomer” visit is Sante Fe, NM with all of the spas andnthe great clean western air.
